2016 Story Starters Semi-Finalists

Congratulations to our 2016 Story Starters Semi-Finalists!

For the fifth time, The Ontario Writers’ Conference has partnered with visual artists of all sorts in the form of our Story Starters Contest – run September, October, November and December of 2015 and January and February 2016 (pictured above). On the first of each month, our website featured an extraordinary work by a local artist and we invited writers from everywhere and of all ages to enter a piece of writing inspired by that work (entry-free).

By taking inspiration from the art, writing a short piece (100 words maximum) and posting it in the comment section of our entry page, 268 writers created works of poetry, prose, dialogue, haiku, etc. for a chance to impress that artist and win a prize for that month.

Semi-Finalists for each month will be reduced to the Top Three Finalists by our final-round judge, Canadian Poet James Dewar and voting for the winner by attendees will take place from displayed entries at the 2016 Ontario Writers’ Conference (April 30th & May 1st in Ajax, Ontario). Artist-related prizes are awarded on Conference Day.

From 268 entries over six months during the Fall 2015 and Winter 2016,  inspired by the Story Starters artworks of the talented Carin Makuz, Erika Takács, Iwona Dufaj, Sally Thurlow, Annabelle Murray and Anja Kooistra, the longlist of semi-finalists for our 2016 competition is as follows:

  • Please list title of works as many of us have entered multiple times and are unaware which piece many have made your list. Thanks, Robin Martin Duttmann

    • Hello, Robin – I will look into this. I might not be able to pull this together before the conference, though… I only received the longlist and shortlist of names that went out in the e-blasts.

      Best,
      Cynthia.
